Shell gets OK for Beaufort prep work

AP -- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Federal officials have given Royal Dutch Shell PLC approval for limited site work in the Beaufort Sea off Alaska's north coast.

The decision Thursday was widely expected. A Shell drill ship, the Kulluk, is positioned in the Beaufort waiting for the whaling season to end.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement already gave Shell approval for similar work in the Chukchi (chuk-CHEE') Sea.

The company can't drill into petroleum zones until its spill response barge is in place. A containment dome on the barge was damaged in tests last weekend.

Shell says it will drill pilot holes and perform other well preparation work this year.

The company hopes to tap into an estimated 26 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 130 trillion cubic feet of natural

I still go to Shell as last resort, since having a car affected by bad gas additive so fuel gauge didn't work - lived with it for yrs until tank needed replacing around yr 15. There was a class action suit but our vehicle was 2 yrs outside range covered. Now here there's been a another death of an attendant during a gas-and-dash & it's come out stn docks wages for thefts & this was over $110 - likely over 2 days pay for the poor fellow. Only thing Shell is doing is stating their policy is not to interfere in criminal activity - no reward to catch the guilty guy, no help with funeral, not even flag at half-mast at local Hq (that's only for royalty & dignitaries) etc. They're getting some very bad press over this, just like their tainted gas scandal they fought tooth & nail till proven guilty in court.
