Natural gas boon holds economic potential

Amarillo.com -- Accelerated American energy production is rewriting what were once common assumptions about the supply and cost of keeping the country — and the rest of the world — running.

While oil is important and estimates of domestic supplies and production are trending upward — the U.S. Energy Information Administration says imports went from 69 percent of national supply in 2006 to 49 percent in 2012 — natural gas is taking center stage to fuel the future. And as conventional supplies of gas decline, unconventional supplies, especially from shale formations, are growing. The largest formation in Texas of the finely textured sedimentary rock is the Barnett Shale west and south of Fort Worth.

What Boon? As more and more vehicles are built to use natural gas OR converted over to natural gas, more natural gas will be used and the price could go up. Don't expect natural gas to stay low for very long, the trend for fuel prices is always up and up more! Many more fueling stations are needed to fuel those CNG vehicles once they are built and sold. Expect to fill more with Natural Gas as it is less dense and has less BTU's than Gasoline or Diesel and will not get the same amount of miles. Honda has a CNG vehicle on the market for quite a while now – Honda Civic GX. Get a refill kit for the home natural gas line and fill up there. If you are on the traveling, know where your fill up stations are and plan according. To all those that think a CNG or a Hydrogen vehicle is a bomb waiting to happen. Why haven't gasoline vehicles exploded on the roads? It's just as explosive as CNG or Hydrogen or more so! Do you really think the government would allow bombs on the road? Engage brain and think about it! Big Oil continues to sell fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. 'Coming out of the closet' Fred's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the jobs are Not here. Fred's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down – no matter how smoooooth talking Fred spins those numbers! People will still drive and buy fuel no matter what but it sure helps to have a job too! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

But long distance transportation needs would seem to require liquified natural gas (LNG) for trains, long haul trucks, pick-ups and cars traveling out of their home area. The refuelling time required for CNG is hours as opposed to LNG which takes about the same time as gasoline or diesel since it is a liquid. The use of multi-fuel vehicles that can run on CNG or gasoline is probably the ultimate practical answer for the vast majority of consumers.

Our fuel prices would be much lower (placing more buying power in the hands of the consumer) and our need to borrow funds to pay our trade balance would drop.
