...I fully agree with Aviator_Rob who said: Message Posted: Aug 24, 2012 11:20:55 PM “Teddy was a lot of things that modern-day Republicans can't seem to wrap their heads around. He was a Conservative in the truest sense of the word. That meant conserving the land and leaving a legacy for future generations. That meant not using up this country's resources at a breakneck speed, just to make more money. TR would be disgusted at the corporatization of this country. He fought the corporations harder than any Republican since. Heck, he practically invented anti-trust legislation. Teddy Roosevelt wouldn't be able to recognize his own party today. And neither would Ronald Reagan, for that matter.” ...Personally, it breaks my heart to think that people are willing to sacrifice our federal lands and destroy wildlife just to pad the pockets of Big Oil. When are you "Drill, Baby, Drill"ers gonna wake up and smell the coffee on the fact that if Big Oil does acquire those lands, it will not necessarily and it very likely won't at all translate into lower prices at the pump for us average consumers. Big Oil is still Big Oil & they exist only to increase their bottom line, not for the betterment of mankind. I miss the days of $1.00 or $1.50 a gallon for gas as well, but, seriously people, destroying federal lands and the wildlife that inhabit it and seizing people's family farmland IS NOT a responsible solution to our gas woes!

It will be interesting to see this proposal being advocated and opposed over the next few months.

Big Oil and other corporations already have too much influence over public policy, especially in the western states. Romney would simply hand over the reins and rode along as a passenger while the corporate “people” ride roughshod over the little folks.

National Parks are held in trust by the federal government for the American people, @wz. They are not for sale. Teddy Roosevelt created them in order to protect them from private developers. Otherwise the Koch brothers would make Yellowstone their own private estate.

It should be some form of a shred decision if the land remains federally owned.

To all those drill, baby, drillers out there, ask yourself "What do the American people actually get out of that?" After all, that oil belongs to them, and not the oil companies.
The federal govenment should just hire the oil companies to drill the wells and then the government should sell the oil itself on the market. All proceeds would go into the U.S. Treasury, instead of Big Oil's pocket.

Most of the land owned by the federal government is not authorized by the Constitution. Only D.C., military bases and federal buildings are to be owned by the federal government. There is no provision made for national parks, monuments, forests or reserves. They should be sold to the states or private owners, with the proceeds used to pay down the national debt.

And thus continues Big Oil's strategy of divide and conquer. It's too hard for them to fight the federal government so now they'll just fight each state government one at a time and still get their way.
State governments have absolutely no idea of what's coming.

Shut down or scale back the EPA and the country will be better off. The US does need to make more use of its own resources.
