Gas goes up, gas goes down; RVers adapt Read more: Gas goes up, gas goes down; RVers adapt - Mywest

West Texas -- Fans of RV travel are a hardy group. They endure traffic jams, mosquitoes and the occasional bear, so fluctuating gas prices won't keep them and their RVs parked at home this summer.

Average U.S. gas prices rose above $3.90 this spring, though they had dropped in most places by the start of June to $3.61 a gallon. But whether they're up or down doesn't make a huge difference for those driving gas-guzzlers, like Bill Battle's Winnebago Itasca Suncruiser that averages about 7 mpg.

Battle and his wife plan to drive their 38-foot motorhome (towing their Jeep) about 1,400 miles round-trip from their home in southeastern Michigan to Forest City, Iowa, for the Winnebago Grand National Rally this summer. It will likely cost them between $700 and $800 in gas, depending on pump prices, plus

If you have to drive one of those and be concerned about gas prices, then sell the thing cause you aren't having any fun going forward.

I don't own an RV, and I don't see myself buying one. But I do have a friend that has one of the big pusher diesels. The high price of fuel did not seem to effect his travels in the least. I guess if you can afford to drop $100k on a vehicle, then you can afford to keep it fed.

Been a few years since I traveled the country in my RV. With the pricing difference across our country I could imagine it would be pretty wild to say the least

Around here oil goes up and gas goes up - then oil goes down and gas stays the same - then oil goes up and gas (that never went down) goes up again.

We spend a lot of time in our trailer. I'd rather spend money on fuel, taking the kids to National Parks, than to have them sitting around playing video games or getting into trouble.

The time I spend with my family, away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, is worth every nickel. My eight year old won't want to make me s'mores forever.

If they have the money to buy one of these things and pay the over night fees, I do not think a dollar or two in gas prices is going to deter their plans.

If I still had a class A RV, it would be sitting in a local campsite or in my side yard.

BTW - Wisconsin Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner = repub.

I guess if you can afford one of those things the gas prices shouldn't really matter that much.

It's nice to live in a free society where if you effh up, you suffer the consequences and if you do well, you reap the benefits.

I think frostyWV said it all: If you can afford an RV then the cost of fuel should not be an issue. Two of my siblings live in two RVs full time. Although the complain about the price of fuel (like we all do), I've never heard either of them suggest that the price of fuel would drive them out of their chosen "homes".
