I usually bought auto components online.
You probably can find better deals and free shipping.

(except M1 full syn, I got it from Costco)

While many people understandably don't care for dealer service, I love my Toyota dealer. $21.95 plus tax for an oil change, oil filter, and tire rotation. Plus every 5th one is free.

JT CHRIS IN AUSTIN HERE: I had to get my ignition part ond the computer keys with little resistance chips on them at the GM dealer. No one else in all of Austin would admit they had it or did not . So I was forced to get fleeced by the dealer. it was for a 2001 Monte Carlo last year they were made and you simply cant get some parts for my car except at the dealer what a shame chris cpr54

Needed a part that only the Ford dealer had in Columbus, any other time, my mechanic does all the work.

I wouldn't trust the dealers to service my car if it was free and they threw in a back rub. Because my engine type is more rare, most dealers of this particular model don't have the knowledge or experience to work on these cars... So it's better to have it done at a specialist or DIY if so inclined.

My nearest dealer is 100 miles away; my trusted mechanic is over 400 miles away.

I used to do most of my own repairs and service. I generally used a local auto parts supplier, but know time prevents this work and I usually buy small items from a department store.

who can afford to go to dealer garages? Maybe I'm just blessed living in an unGodly depressed area, most mechanics are way cheaper than dealerships and do better work. If it's something less arduous, I go to the junk yard and do it myself.

I have always used my dealership because they have records of recalls and replacements which I would not normally be aware of since they are not SAFETY RECALLS. This has saved me thousands of dollars over the years. (It's too bad American made cars have so many recalls. Perhaps that's why my GM is in trouble.)

dealerships are to expensive and to slow getting parts, aftermarket is the way to go, used parts or junk yards aren't always guaranteed

I only buy from the dealerships when the part is not avail anywhere else. Too bad that dealerships can't be competitive when it comes to pricing.

for all those who are "shade tree mechanics", make sure you keep your receipts. New cars with the long term warranties, the dealers want to see proof of maintence or else they can say you didn't maintain the car so the warranty is voided. I have my 300 and Ram svc done at the dealer, and the cost is lower than going to a quick oil change place. And if you are looking to buy a new car, you can haggle the salesman to throw in 2-3 year svc plan for free.

For those who don't buy anything at all for their vehicles, I have to wonder how often they change the filters and oil, etc... With all the quickie lube places those basic things should never be skimped on no matter how inept and forgetful (like me) an owner might be!

Autozone. Unless you are rich, you should be changing your brakes, changing you oil, and taking care of rotors, calipers, etc. I stress the word rich but it could also be because you are lazy or don't have the knowledge. I dont have any knowledge on cars, but I can change my oil! You should at least be able to do that which could easily save you $10

this poll was poorly worded!!
