NJ official seeks 'Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act'

GasBuddy Blog -- Officially, it's called the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act (A-352), a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Reed Gusciora. And if it gains momentum, that may help all of us.

The bill is designed to loosen up the vise-like grip that automotive dealers have on repair work for vehicles requiring advanced computer and diagnostic technologies that are integral elements for vehicles. While computers have made cars more reliable and efficient, they have also made them more complicated to diagnose and repair.

As such, consumers are often forced to get their vehicle repaired solely by a manufacturer's car dealer, denying them any choice. Often consumers cannot get their vehicle fixed by the mechanic they might prefer...

This bill should be enacted in EVERY state throughout this country, although I'm sure that the car dealers and manufacturers associations will lobby very heavily AGAINST it.

The answer to the question asked by the article, "Is it fair" for car companies to make it so complicated it can only be repaired at a dealer, is YES. I like to get my car repaired at other than dealers too, but if you don't like that a car needs to be repaired at a dealer, then don't buy that car.

I am in Maryland, but this would set a good precedent.
The SRS warning light in my 2007 Camry came on and my regular mechanic said I had to take it to the dealer. The dealer charged me more than $150, and all they did was "re-calibrate" the computer so that it did not think there was a problem.
For the record, the problem was an invalid reading from the front passenger occupant-classification-system. They said that there wasn't a problem with any sensor, just the computer received a bad reading for several seconds (potentially due to something/someone pushing on the bottom of the seat).

Average owners can't work on their vehicles anymore, too computerized.

How will New Jersey owners know what shop to pick for repairs that won't void their manufacturers warranty?

P.S. OLD NEWS again!

The PROBLEM is New Jersey itself! They have some of the stupidest laws in the world in NJ! One can't even pump ones own gas so how would one be allowed to work on ones own car. You are not even allowed to turn left, you are not smart enough to know when its safe to do that, you have to turn right making a loop so you cross over the street at a right angle with a traffic light. And they wonder why traffic can't get out of NY, its because its all backed up by jug handles in NJ!

"I can go to AAmco, and AutoZone and get car computer checked free of charge."

They will give you any diagnostic codes that may be present, and what they mean, but they won't fix them, or likely even tell you everything you need to know to fix them.

"The price of a new vehicle makes the dealership very little money."

That's probably true, but based on what they give you for a trade-in, they must make a few thousand in profits on the used car traded in.

Maybe it's because I only drive older cars.

But, aren't code readers readily available? Heck, I have one that plugs in and sends data real-time via bluetooth to my phone.

Are the latest cars that much more complex than my 90s models?

My brother, an amateur mechanic, has no problem repairing cars. Are professional mechanics in NJ really that stupid? I don't think so.

The price of a new vehicle makes the dealership very little money. The actual profit comes from repairs and warranty work, as I've been told by several repair shop managers.

This is good. Dealership service departments are nothing more than overpriced parts-swap barns.
