I like the looks of the new Ford Focus Electric. The Nissan Leaf is ugly. However, I'm not about to buy a Ford electric car because it cost $40,000 and I wouldn't use it that much. I figure that I'll use it 6,000 miles a year for in-town driving and still need a second car.

If I have a second car then I'm spending about $65,000 on cars, $40k + $25k. That is too much. I don't use that much gas, maybe 400 gallons a year.

Still "price".
They are just not cost effective at this point.

Before I seriously considered an electric vehicle, the price would have to come down to be on a par with traditional, internal combustion powered vehicles, and they'd need find a way to make the range on a full charge closer to what you can get on a full tank of gas.

Equivalent cost and range to a gasoline or diesel car.

I would need about 250 miles range OR sufficient quick charging stations. Also the price would have to be such that the "break even" point is about two years or less.

Good Morning DerekS. As I stated on other Topics of this subject, I wrote my college thesis in 1968 on the electric car using 90 references as it was a research-type document. Many of the problems back then, except the lead acid batteries, are the same as now. Today, however, the price of the vehicles are beyond my means and some of the problems have wandered from the technical world to the political realm (e.g. incentive programs, the green movement, etc.).

I just bought a new Chevrolet Sonic 2LT Hatchback three weeks ago today. It cost under $20,000, gets decent gasoline mileage, is comfortable and safe, so maybe when I'm in the market again, I take another gander at the electric car. The technology needs to improve and the price needs to come down. These were the same concerns in 1968 when I wrote my thesis. Take care :-) .

I have one car and there is no way I can justify the expense of buying and maintaining two cars so I could only justify buying an electric car if it could do essentually everything my current car does for me. This means a range of greater than 150 miles on a charge and a purchase premium less than $5000 (about what I would spend on gas).

reasonable initial price, range of at least 500 miles, and some sense that the battery life and replacement cost will be reasonable

A 300 to 400 mile range, 10 minute recharge, and prices comparable to gas engine cars. That shouldn't be asking for too much.

Not anytime soon. Since Obama's electric plan is being enacted by the EPA. "Electric rates under my plan will necessarily skyrocket".

Obviously the cost of the vehicle is holding back a lot of buyers (me included.) Extended range is important as well as recharging station availability. It's happening though.
